Artist's Comments

Something I did for illustration class.

So people complain about this. My main objective with this piece was to depict mixed emotions. Maybe that isn't the right choice of words, but I wanted the possibility of different outcomes. The piece is about a quasi-relationship (quasi due to the fact that it was never engaged) and my uncertainty of whatever it might have been at the time. The female is dominant, visual hierarchy is established with her position and footprint on the paper. She holds his neck and rests her hand on his head, but the touch is soft. The male is submissive, vulnerable. His hand gently grasps her wrist.

The female's hands are in a position to do a number of things. She could hold him up. She could force him under. She could show him something. She could just continue scratching his scalp and running her fingers along his jaw. His hand could be an act of resistance. A method of support.

Water could be a few things, maybe the subconscious, a symbol of femininity, or an act of spiritual cleansing. The expressions show no struggle, but the mood and tone could change any second.

Ink and gouache on paper 2006.

Etherized. By Indifference. by ~tasteslikejim was done as an assignment, but it has the kind of clarity in conception that doesn't seem forced. And as far as the use of negative space, it allows the aysmmetrical balance to work very well. (Suggested by ~insanellamagirl and Featured by `zeruch)

That's one of the parts of the piece that kinda do it over for everyone, haha.

When I realized that I had a chance to do reflections, I jumped on it. Then I spent about two hours trying to figure out how the hell it would work!

I can't express what I love the most about this picture.. Seriously. Maybe, well, I think that I love the most about it is the current mood, as if the calm before the storm. Like you said, it could be interpreted in a many ways, and that calm before the storm could be good and bad..

I probably love the most the curious expectation looking at it brings. As if I have to sit on the edge of my chair and wait for the story to begin. Just... wonderful, wonderful job.

we threw our heads back and laughed until we cried
we laughed because the world is absurd and beautiful and small...
